2Pi Optics launches world's first metalens fisheye camera

At CES 20204, 2Pi Optics launched the first fisheye camera utilizing the company's innovative metalens technology, marking a significant advancement in the tech industry. This pioneering technology is highly anticipated by electronics design engineers and product managers seeking to shrink the size of digital cameras in applications such as advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), AR/VR, UAVs, robotics, and various industrial settings.

 

"Today's refractive fisheye lenses, which are used to capture wide-angle, panoramic images, have hit a design roadblock," said Dr. Juejun Hu, president and co-founder of 2Pi Optics. "They require between six and twelve stacked lens components, which limits their compactness and affordability. Our design, in contrast, outperforms conventional refractive, wide-FOV optics in all areas: size, weight, performance, and cost. Better still, 2Pi's metalenses can be manufactured at wafer scale in conventional semiconductor foundries."

 

WHY METALENSES?

  • In contrast to conventional wide-FOV refractive lenses, which are typically made up of multiple stacked lens pieces, 2Pi’s proprietary technology uses a wafer-thin, flat metalens (a wafer-thin material patterned with microscopic features that focus and manipulate lightwaves) to replace the bulky and expensive lenses. 

  • Through this revolutionary approach, ultracompact, high-performance optical imagers and sensors can be designed, resulting in revolutionary applications in consumer electronics, automotive sensing, industrial inspection, and biomedical diagnosis.
