HerdDogg is a unique and innovative approach to improving herd health and happiness.

HerdDogg (based in Ashland, OR) has just announced $2.3M in seed funding. Serra Ventures is the lead investor, along with Innova Ventures and iSelect. This is a great story about how a scrappy startup has overcome technical challenges (guess what, Bluetooth ear tags and large animals don't always go well together!) to convince dairy farmers to give them a try.

  • Founded in 2015 by Melissa Brandao, a serial entrepreneur and one of very few women launching agtech businesses in a male-dominated sector.

  • HerdDogg made it onto the public stage during "America's Greatest Makers" a few years ago. Now, the company is now poised to ramp up commercialization after successful field trials and with VC money in the bank.

  • HerdDogg markets a patented IoT-based system that includes:

    • DoggTags™ (attached to the animals’ ears);

    • Cloud-connected DoggBone™ readers (placed at strategic sites around the farm, these gather livestock biometrics and behavioral data);

    • HerdDogg mobile app (provides anytime/anywhere access and alerts for each animal’s health record).

Field trials so far have been really positive. Some of the questions HerdDogg can answer:

  • Is my animal in heat?

  • Is she ill or injured?

  • Is she in the right pen or pasture?
